Introduction :
Perineal trauma assessment and repair is a crucial clinical skill that midwives working in a public birthing hospital in Hong Kong should possess. To ensure competency and service standard, enhancement in existing perineal management educational programme is essential. Skill stations for wound assessment and administration of local anaesthesia were introduced to enrich student midwives and junior midwives’ knowledge, skills and confidence.
Objectives :
To examine the effectiveness of the workshop. To equip student midwives and junior midwives to manage perineal birth trauma. To explore the perceived learning needs. To plan better in-service training for midwifery staff.
Methodology :
An evaluation study was conducted to examine the effectiveness of the workshop in formative, process and summative aspects. All participants of the perineal repair workshops held on 20 June and 22 October 2025 were invited to complete the pre- and post-workshop questionnaire and course evaluation survey for data collection.
Result & Outcome :
There were 26 participants including student midwives and junior midwives. Seven participants had no experience in perineal repair before the workshop, 14 had hands on practice less than 5 times, 3 had hands on practice 5 to 10 times, and 2 had passed the clinical assessment for perineal wound repair. 92.3% of the participants perceived improvement in their level of knowledge and confidence in perineal wound repair. Two participants were identified to have special needs for individualized coaching and support. Participants responded that the workshop was good. They stated that this training was especially useful for suture beginners. The workshop was beneficial for midwifery staff.
