Introduction :
Emergency Medical Team (EMT) has been developed in A&E for decades, for dispatching and providing Field Triage and Medical Interventions to casualties at field upon request of Fire Services Department (FSD). There was Disaster Field Triage and Management Workshop organized in Hospital Authority for Emergency Physicians and Nurses.
Objectives :
To analyze the EMT dispatched in A&E in the past and plan to meet the needs of the future
Methodology :
Record book of EMT of A&E was studied retrospectively from 2012 to 2025, with special attention paid to 1) Composition of team, 2) Training and qualification of staffs, 3) Gears to field, 4) Roles and responsibilities, 5) Incident and causalities, 6) Duration of the dispatched, 7) Transport to Field and 8) Comment of EMT. Rooms for improvement were suggested.
Result & Outcome :
There were 6 episodes of EMT dispatched from 2012 to 2025, each with one Emergency Physician and Nurse. 6 Fellows and 4 Specialty Nurses and 2 Registered Nurses were dispatched. All were equipped with HA EMT Uniform and Gears, 83% of them had attended workshop of Disaster Field Triage and Management. 5 out of 6 episodes carried out the roles and responsibilities of Field Triage and Interventions, 1 episode did the declare no sign of life. The incidents were ranged from Motor Vehicle Crashes to Scaffolding incident, Mass gathering and Fire Incident. Casualties were ranged from 2 to 239 (dead and injured). Duration of dispatched were ranged from 2 to 9 hours. All took the ambulance of FSD to field. There were comments of working at the warm zone, monitor by press, fire and smoke, safety at field, support at field, handling the dead, gears, physical requirement and psychological support.
Conclusion
In dispatching EMT to field, staff safety was always the main concern. Besides equipping them with training and drills, it was recommended dispatching specialists to field, revisiting the EMT uniforms and gears, providing support at field and offering psychological support to them.
