Introduction :
At Tuen Mun Hospital, procedural information provided to patients relied on traditional methods, giving fact sheets from the Hospital Authority, and verbal communication by physicians. These methods often lead to poor understanding and memorization. Furthermore, Invasive procedures frequently trigger fear and anxiety, which is intensified when patients are not well-informed or have misunderstandings about the procedures. A pilot education program composed of educational videos and pamphlets, is proposed to patients before bronchoscopy to promote their understanding of bronchoscopy in order to reduce fear and anxiety, ultimately enhancing patient empowerment.
Objectives :
- To enhance patient’s understanding of bronchoscopy - To reduce patient’s anxiety and fear before bronchoscopy
Methodology :
The education program was conducted from July to October 2025, with implementation focused on two respiratory wards and one day ward at Tuen Mun Hospital. Eligible candidates included adult patients who either attended the day ward for pre-admission assessment approximately two weeks before bronchoscopy or were admitted for in-patient preparation one day before the scheduled procedures. Patients unable to comprehend educational content or provide informed consent, were excluded to ensure the accuracy of data collection. To evaluate the program effectiveness in improving participants’ knowledge and confidence, a Pre- and Post-questionnaire was conducted before and after the education program.
Result & Outcome :
To enhance patient and carer’s empowerment on Bronchoscopy A total of 42 participants, aged from 41 to 90, were recruited in the education program. 55% (n=23) of participants (Post-consent group) had already signed the informed consent form with a physician prior to the education program while the remaining 45% (n=19) (Pre-consent group) had not. The overall correct response rate was from 71.9% to 94.8%.The two most common misconceptions in which procedure route (50%) and post-procedure care (45.2%) were both exceeded to 90%.Post-Consent group had a higher knowledge score (75.7%) compared to the Pre-Consent group (67.4%).the Post-Consent group scoring 95.7% and the Pre-Consent group scoring 93.7%, nearly eliminating the initial knowledge gap.The confidence level of both groups was a marked increase after the intervention from 3.2to 5.5 for Post-Consent group and 3.1 to 4.8 for Pre-Consent group. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with the intervention achieving a mean score of 5.4 for usefulness and 5.5 for ease of understanding.
