Introduction :
Nursing care in the smart era is evolving rapidly with the integration of new technology. Smart initiatives have transformed traditional nursing practices and shift the focus toward modernized patient-centered care. Emerging technologies have introduced comprehensive tools that enhance the care process, such as seamless digital platforms and unified system. The shift from desktop-based Clinical Management Systems (CMS) to tablet-based system has improved the working experience and efficiency of healthcare professionals.
Objectives :
At Pok Oi Hospital, the respiratory nursing service has successfully integrated smart initiatives into its Non-Invasive Ventilator (NIV) program starting from 2024. The NIV program offers on-site consultations and advance specialist support between wards. The mobile nature of the service creates a structural complexity on daily operation. The immerge of CMS functions into tablets has streamlined the operation —NIV nurses can access essential clinical information, such as vital signs, radiological and laboratory results, directly at the bedside through a single tablet platform. This improvement has minimized the need to move repeatedly between bedsides and workstations, enabled us to deliver more responsive and efficient care, thereby enhancing both care quality and patient safety. Integration with other smart modules like e-Vitals and e-Doc has further simplified the operation, alleviated the workload and improved staff satisfaction.
Methodology :
Equipment management is another key component of the program. In the past, device tracking and maintenance relied heavily on manual processing, which involves receiving loan requests, equipment delivery and input record manually. The introduction of the “Ward Place Portal” and “Equipment Module” have revolutionized this process. The new equipment dashboard has digitalized and re-engineered the traditional workflow, improved equipment coordination and streamlined the loan process. Nurses can now monitor devices remotely through digital platform, allowed real-time tracking to optimize equipment deployment, fulfilled clinical demands and reduced manpower required for manual procedures.
Result & Outcome :
Integration of smart initiatives into daily nursing workflows presents challenges. Targeted training with structured orientation and ongoing technical support are essential to build staff confidence and competence when using new systems. Nevertheless, these initiatives offer valuable opportunities to modernize traditional practices, improve care efficiency and convenience for staff across multiple dimensions— from software support in clinical service to equipment management with digital tool. In the future, the upgrade in Clinical Dashboard could streamline and facilitate work prioritization. It is anticipated smart technology will make a significant stride in healthcare industry.
