Introduction :
House officers in recent years have often been commented as having low engagement and poor motivation at work. Despite changes in working environment and culture (compared to the earlier years) being attributed as cause of reduced engagement, it is much believed that the use of Appreciate Inquiry will bring about positive changes leading to raised levels of engagement. Appreciate inquiry has been proven effective in improving patient care and enhancing individual and group motivation by changing the way participants think, approach, and imagine the future. A recent systematic review published in BMJ also stated positive behavioral and organization changes in terms of engagement as well as improved patient outcomes. However, it was commented that quantitative assessment e.g. with scoring charts was lacking in some studies while some did not show comparisons between pre-intervention and post-intervention groups.
Objectives :
Primary Objective of the study is to see how appreciate enquiry motivates house officer's engagement.
Methodology :
Recruitment of housemen is being done at a local tertiary institution of a single department during every 3-months rotation from July 2024 to March 2026. Number of housemen aimed to be recruited is around 40, where they will be randomly allocated by computer to groups A and B. Group A will be intervention group where affirmative inquiry will be applied while group B will be the control group. For the intervention group, there will be periodical meetings with subjects individually and in groups to implement appreciative inquiry while no additional changes will be made in the control group. Quantitative assessment with the Gallup-12 questionnaire will be done at the beginning and end of each rotation and scores will be assessed with the independent two sample t-test for any statistical difference.
Result & Outcome :
Improvements in scorings have been noted in Questions 3,6,7,11 in the preliminary results. Engagement has been noted subjectively with the house officers expressing more feeling of motivation and engagement themselves. It is hoped that the results of this study will lay the foundations of positive effects on doctors and be extrapolated to other ranks, specialties and other roles in the healthcare industry
