In-Hospital Stroke
Introduction :
In-hospital stroke is defined as stroke occurring in patients during hospitalization for another diagnosis with an estimated prevalence of 7-17% (Nouh A, Amin-Hanjani S, Furie KL, et al., 2022). Locally, in-patient sources account for about 18% of all stroke calls in Pok Oi Hospital in 2025. In-hospital stroke patients tend to experience a longer waiting time in receiving assessment and management. It was reported that in-hospital stroke patients have a significantly longer interval from symptom detection to neuroimaging compared with stroke patients in community attending the emergency department. Healthcare providers’ awareness of in-hospital stroke is of paramount importance in providing timely management to reduce morbidity and enhance recovery of patients.
Objectives :
We aim to improve nurses’ knowledge level and awareness of in-hospital stroke through providing an additional one-hour educational session on in-hospital stroke management to nursing staff. Education targeting new-comers and nurse graduates is particularly important because they are new to the clinical environment and may not be familiar with existing stroke workflow. The study could provide insight into the use of educational intervention and guidance on the need for regular training or refresher courses for nurses on the topic of in-hospital stroke management
Methodology :
The education session lasts for one hour. The content of the session is based on the core elements from “Identifying Best Practices to Improve Evaluation and Management of In-Hospital Stroke: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association” (2022). Paired T-test is adopted to evaluate Pre- and Post- educational session questionnaire on knowledge level of in-hospital stroke management. Pre-test and Post-test questionnaire consists of 10 Multiple-choice questions on stroke symptoms and awareness of suspected stroke. The questionnaire will be conducted immediately before and after the educational session. The target sample size is 20 nurses (N=20).
Result & Outcome :
The educational session and study were conducted in November, 2025. Eighteen registered nurses (RN) and two Enrolled Nurses (EN) were recruited in the educational session and pre- and post-questionnaire done to evaluate their understanding and knowledge on basic stroke symptoms and reaction to in-hospital stroke. Post test results reflected a significant improvement in stroke symptoms knowledge and immediate response to take with suspected in-hospital stroke, reflecting from average pre-test score of 7.4 versus average post-test score of 8.6. Conclusion:In-hospital stroke awareness and management are an area with considerable potential for improvement. Through the delivery of in-hospital stroke management educational sessions, the knowledge level of nursing staff could be evaluated and help customize in-hospital stroke management training for nurses in the future.
