Wound coaching in NTEC FMC
Introduction :
The prevalence of complex wound cases in Family Medicine Clinics (FMCs)has escalated, resulting in significant challenges for nurses and an increasing burden on junior and newcomer nurses. Starting in 2023, the regulating clinical coaching by wound specialist nurses has been conducted across Family Medicine Clinics of NTEC. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of coaching provided by our department’s wound specialist nurses in enhancing the competence of clinic nurses in wound care management. As a result, patients can receive initial advanced wound care early, improving the healing process. This approach not only decreases the need for specialist wound care but also reduces the frequency of visits to the wound nurse clinic and shortening waiting times.
Objectives :
-To assess the perceived effectiveness of regular coaching from wound specialist nurses on the clinical skills and knowledge -To identify areas for enhancement in the coaching process
Methodology :
An online questionnaire was distributed to nurses working in FMCs from December 1 to December 14, 2025. The questionnaire included 8 questions covering demographics, assessments of coaching frequency and quality, and perceived efficacy. Data were collected and analyzed to provide a comprehensive view of the impact of coaching.
Result & Outcome :
The study gathered responses from 84 nurses. Among the respondents 28.6% were junior and newcomer nurses with less than 3 years of experience in FMCs. Over 97% of respondents reported receiving valuable guidance and support from wound specialist nurses during coaching. Despite the challenges in managing chronic and infected wounds, nurses indicated noticeable improvements in skills and knowledge due to the coaching. Notably, the attendance and headcount rates at the wound clinics decreased from 1.6 in 2023 to 1.42 in 2025 after conducting the coaching. Ongoing clinical coaching provides clear direction for adherence to care plans, facilitates early access to advanced wound care, decreases the need for speciality care and significantly shortens the waiting time from 3 weeks to 1 week for the wound nurse clinics.
