Introduction :
Quality and safety are paramount and serve as the foundation for occupational therapists in the delivery of clinical services. In September 2025, a mentoring program specifically designed for the daily workflow and clinical practice was implemented for newly recruited occupational therapists and those with less than three years of clinical experience at the New Territories West Cluster (NTWC) Occupational Therapy Department.
Objectives :
1. To increase the knowledge and clinical application of newly recruited occupational therapist in the following aspects:
-Patient and staff safety and service standards
-Emergency handling, AIRS reporting
-Correct patient identification -Patient data privacy
-Good practice in documentation
-Handling of work stress
Methodology :
The mentoring program included six training sessions, each lasting 60 minutes with Q&A sessions. All senior occupational therapists were invited to prepare and deliver the assigned topics. The training sessions were conducted and completed in September 2025, specifically designed for newly recruited occupational therapists in the NTWC Occupational Therapy Department.
Result & Outcome :
Eighteen junior occupational therapists participated in this mentorship training program. Nine had less than one year of clinical experience, and nine had less than three years of clinical experience.
A post training program survey was conducted. The feedback on the overall quality and relevance of the training program was overwhelmingly positive, with 100% of participants selecting a rating of 4(Good) or 5(excellent). Additionally, 100% participants indicated that the training better equipped them to provide safe and quality service and recommend repeating the orientation training program in next year. This newly designed Quality and Safety Orientation Training Program helps establish departmental standards of practice and ensures compliance among newly recruited occupational therapists. Ultimately, it leads to better patient care and supports the professional growth of new hires.
