Introduction :
Background: Hospital Acquired Pressure injury remains a significant global challenge for healthcare system. Nurses play a key role in its prevention. In the Department of Rehabilitation, a shortage and high turnover of experienced nurses have led to knowledge gaps for the novice nurses resulting in higher rate of pressure injury compare with Hospital Authority benchmark. This study evaluated the impact of preceptorship program on nurses’ knowledge about prevention of pressure injury.
Objectives :
To enhance the nurses’ knowledge of pressure injury prevention.
Methodology :
A quasi-experimental study was conducted in four rehabilitation wards. A five-week preceptorship program was implemented from April to June 2025, recruited 27 preceptees. The nurses’ knowledge was compared before and after the program by using the Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Assessment Tool (PUKAT 2.0). Data were analyzed using the SPSS version 23.
Result & Outcome :
Results: The mean PUKAT 2.0 score was increased from 10.52 (SD 2.47) to 13.37 (SD 3.13) after the preceptorship program. Participants showed a significant increase in total score by 2.85 (95% CI: 1.8, 3.9; p< 0.001). The sub-scores in the Aetiology and prevention theme showed higher gains of 0.89 (p< 0.001) and 1.07 (p= 0.004) respectively, compared to other themes. Nurses with a lower education level or those without prior pressure injury program tend to have a greater increase in total score by 1.35 and 1.54, respectively. Conclusions: The preceptorship program showed a significant positive impact on the nurses’ knowledge in pressure injury prevention. Expansion to multiple sites is recommended to validate the findings and strengthen generalizability.
