World Osteoporosis Day in HKEC
Introduction: :
Osteoporosis is a significant public health issue among healthcare workers who face increased risk due to occupational demands. This project aims to screen HKEC staff for osteoporosis while enhancing screening and provide education for bone health improvement
Objectives: :
1. Increase Awareness: •Enhance staff knowledge about osteoporosis prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. 2. Identify At-Risk Staff: •Implement an Osteoporosis Screening Program (OSP) at the Occupational Health Centre (OHC). 3. Ensure Follow-Up: •Develop a structured workflow for referring at-risk staff to primary care or specialists for necessary follow-up. 4. Promote Healthy Lifestyles/Behavioral changes •Evaluate shifts in high calcium dietary habits and engagement in weight-bearing exercises
Methodology: :
Educational Forum on “World Osteoporosis Day (WOD)” on 12 October 2022 •Theme:“強骨健康-齊來關注世界骨質疏鬆日” •Talk Show featuring an Orthopedic Specialist, Endocrinologist, and Occupational Medicine Physician. •Lecture titled “Step Up for Bone Health” by a Physiotherapist and demonstrations of weight-bearing exercises. •Distribution of souvenirs, including resistance bands and towels inscribed with “骨質疏鬆莫輕視 飲食運動要適宜.” •Lecture on “Healthy Bone Diet, 補鈣全攻略” by a Dietitian on 26 October 2022 Osteoporosis Screening Program (OSP) •Target Population: Minimum of 160 participants attended WOD event with telephone booking appointment for Osteoporosis screening from December 2022 to April 2023. •Standardized Tools adopted: the USG Densitometer, Body Composition Scanner and Osteoporosis Assessment Form (OAF) Referral Process •A management workflow was established for to evaluate individuals at varying risk levels, ensuring timely medical consultations and education, including DEXA referrals. Lifestyle Promotion Initiatives •Collaborated with Physiotherapists to facilitate exercise classes aimed at improving bone health among staff diagnosed with osteoporosis. Post-Event Survey •Conducted telephone follow-ups to assess changes in dietary habits and engagement in weight-bearing exercises
Result & Outcome: :
Results and Outcomes I. Educational Forum (WOD) •Attendance: 324 participants (on-site and online). •Satisfaction: Achieved 100% satisfaction for the talk show and activities •Feedback: Indicated strong interest in regular programming and increased motivation for weight bearing exercise II. Osteoporosis Screening Program (OSP) •Participation: 171 staff members were screened •Results: Normal (39), Moderate Risk (100), High Risk (31), Unidentified (1). III. Referral Process •Referrals: 38 participants underwent DEXA investigations. •8 cases were identified of osteoporosis and referred for Osteoporotic clinic; 19 diagnosed with osteopenia were recommended for Staff Clinic/Family Medicine for Calcium supplement and 11 cases were normal.
