Introduction: :
Eleven nurses from various specialties and hospitals in Shenzhen, China, will undergo a year long clinical exchange under limited registration in 8 local hospitals within the Hospital Authority (HA) in Hong Kong from July, 2025. HAHO Specialty Advisory Group of Enterostomal Therapy (ETSAG) has developed a special program "Shenzhen-Hong Kong Specialty Nursing Knowledge-Exchange Program - Stoma and Wound Care Nursing" which aims to enhance the professional development of nursing personnel through an innovative exchange initiative by standardized training according to their needs, helping them to work in Wound Team families. This initiative addresses the growing demand for standardized training in stoma and wound care while fostering cross-border collaboration between nursing professionals.
Objectives: :
To enhance the knowledge and practical skills of Shenzhen nurses in stoma and wound care, and to foster effective communication and collaboration among healthcare professionals across regions. To increase staff self-confidence and competencies by customized workshops, ultimately achieve win-win outcome between services and training.
Methodology: :
With the collaboration from different parties, this one-year program consists of 10 key components (Surgical wards attachment; wound round; wound nurse clinic visit; 5 educational visits at Burns Centre, Community Service, Family Medicine Clinic, Colorectal service, Endoscopy Centre; hospital exchange; 3 interactive workshops; 3 progress review meeting; case study; wound care project and clinical exchange logbook).
All nurses have assigned to nurse consultants from different hospitals, providing personalized mentorship and guidance. Three tailor-made workshops focusing on practical skills, best practices, and language support have been organized by different Clusters to address the specific needs of the Shenzhen nurses. Written post-tests and dictations have been arranged to assess their knowledge acquisition throughout the program. Each nurse has to participate in group project to enhance teamwork skills and engage in individual reporting to consolidate their learning experience.
Result & Outcome: :
The WILP program represents a significant step toward fostering professional development and enhancing services need among nursing professionals. By working hand in hand, we can build bridges between cultures and ultimately improve healthcare delivery across borders. First Intensive workshop on Advanced Wound Care Products was organized by ETSAG on 31-10-2025. All 11 Shenzhen nurses got 9/10 marks in post-test (6.6/10 in pre-test) with very good and positive feedback received. Ideas of cross border wound care services were shared in the Progress Review Meeting with all 8 nurse consultants. The structured training approach has fostered a harmonious working environment, enhancing collaboration between Hong Kong and Shenzhen healthcare professionals. By standardizing training practices and overcome the language barriers, we aim to establish a shared knowledge base that leads to improved patient care and support the enormous front line wound care services. The program will also serve as a model for future international nursing exchanges, promoting experience sharing and collaborative practice.
