Introduction: :
In response to an unprecedented increase in the number of fresh graduate nurses, a small group teaching is introduced to provide more interactive and personalized learning experiences for them. Providing thorough training for all the surgical fresh graduate nurses becomes more challenging and they find difficulty in adapting to the nursing role transition in the first six months. We have also identified a knowledge gap regarding the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program among previous fresh graduate nurses. Therefore, the Surgical Preceptee Training Series for a small group of 2025 surgical fresh graduate nurses was initiated.
Objectives: :
1. To enhance surgical knowledge and care of surgical diseases 2. To increase awareness of ERAS protocols 3. To facilitate role transition to Registered Nurse and to boost up confidence
Methodology: :
Surgical Preceptee Training Series involves six topics, each consisting of a 30 minutes small group session with 2 to 3 participants. Six topics include EARS program, post-op stoma complication, post-op complication, intestinal obstruction, oesophageal varices and pancreatitis. Each lesson consists of three components: 1. Mind mapping - To organize and visualize key concepts by writing the cause, nursing care, investigation and management of surgical cases 2. Small group discussion - To engage in collaborative learning and share diverse perspectives 3. Real case sharing - To present actual case studies to illustrate best practices and critical decision-making A questionnaire will be obtained after each lesson. The questionnaire was designed using open questions and a 5-point Likert scale to assess participant knowledge and confidence level and the effectiveness of the program.
Result & Outcome: :
A total of 6 participants joined the program. All participants agreed that the training program has increased their surgical knowledge and facilitated the role transition to Registered Nurse. Over 90% of the participants strongly agreed that the training boosted up their confidence in managing cases in the clinical area. Moreover, all the participants agreed that the program has increased their awareness of ERAS protocols. Some positive feedback given by the respondents included “useful for my nursing career”, “reinforcing my knowledge of nursing care and understanding more about the rationale of the treatment” and “help to consolidate our knowledge towards the general care of disease”. They also recommended keeping this program for the fresh graduate nurses in the future. In conclusion, this program could achieve all the objectives and all the participants were satisfied with it.
