Introduction: :
In September 2023, the Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Ward 3E of United Christian Hospital (UCH) was temporarily relocated to Haven of Hope Hospital (HHH) due to ongoing expansion projects at UCH. UCH is an acute care facility, whereas HHH is an extended care hospital, presenting distinct challenges. Traditional resuscitation workflows designed for acute care settings are often suboptimal in extended care environments, leading to delays in critical interventions and potentially poorer outcomes. Therefore, improving resuscitation efforts is essential to ensure patient safety and high-quality emergency care.
Objectives: :
1.To familiarize ward nursing staff with the resuscitation workflow in a rehabilitation hospital.
2.To enhance clear communication among ward nursing staff through standardized protocols.
3.To refresh the resuscitation knowledge and skills of ward nursing staff.
Methodology: :
Four key components for enhancing resuscitation efforts:
1. Tailor-Designed CPR Drill Script for Early Practice A structured CPR drill script was developed to provide a framework for practice sessions, helping ward nursing staff understand their roles and responsibilities during emergencies. 2. Regular CPR Drills with Hospital Emergency Response Team (ERT) Collaboration CPR drills are conducted quarterly to maintain ward staff competence in cardiac emergencies. Collaboration with the hospital’s ERT enhances training by providing specialized expertise in advanced resuscitation and crisis communication. 3. Maintaining an Up-to-Date Notice Board Near the Emergency Trolley A notice board placed near the emergency trolley displays current CPR information and is regularly reviewed for quick reference.
Standardizing Workflow for Handling Medical Emergency Scenarios The O&T rehabilitation ward has established a detailed emergency workflow for transferring critically ill patients. Staff are trained to recognize emergencies and initiate protocols, including requesting CPR assistance. 4. Cue Card for Emergency Contact Among Inter-Hospital Teams An emergency contact cue card provides staff with quick access to essential contact information and procedures during emergency situations.
Result & Outcome: :
First, the resuscitation workflows have been successfully implemented in the hospital. Second, the ERT’s involvement has improved team dynamics and competencies through diverse drills and structured debriefings, resulting in high compliance rates in resuscitation skills among ward staff. Additionally, the updated emergency notice board provides vital resources for effective communication and readiness, ensuring staff are familiar with emergency management and inter-hospital protocols, even when immediate medical support is unavailable. Finally, O&T rehabilitation ward staff have reported 100% satisfaction with the emergency cue card.
