Introduction: :
The Integrated Birth Centre (IBC) at Kwong Wah Hospital (KWH) has resumed full service in October 2023. It offers a midwife-led model of car providing continuous, individualized support for low-risk mothers throughout antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods. The home-like environment of IBC is designed to enhance childbirth experience, and improve clinical and psychological outcomes.
Objectives: :
To review the birth outcomes of women under the continuous midwife-led model of care at IBC.
Methodology: :
A retrospective study was conducted to analyze the clinical data for all low-risk mothers who gave birth at IBC from October 2023 to December 2025.
Result & Outcome: :
Normal Spontaneous Delivery (NSD) A total of 67 low-risk mothers had been served throughout antepartum to intrapartum period. All mothers had normal spontaneous deliveries. Mother-friendly Practice In total, 11 mothers (16.4%) chose to deliver in birth chair. Most mothers chose non-pharmacological pain relief. Pethidine injection and Entonox inhalation utilization rate was 5% and 7%. Episiotomy Rate The episiotomy rates at IBC were 33.3% in 2024 and 23.1% in 2025 comparing to the hospital's overall rate 45% in 2024 and 40% in 2025. Immediate Postpartum Care Immediate skin-to-skin contact was achieved in 97-100% of mothers and delayed cord clamping was achieved in 100%. Obstetric Complications Postpartum haemorrhage occurred in 15% of mothers. 4 mothers required transfer to delivery suite for interventions and close monitoring. Breastfeeding Rate Nearly 50% of mothers who delivered at IBC opted for exclusive breastfeeding upon discharge comparing to the overall rate in KWH 21.2% in 2024. Conclusion The statistics of IBC demonstrate that midwife-led model of care in home-like environment shows positive outcomes and helps to achieve baby-friendly hospital initiative. The results supported IBC offering a safe, personalized and empowering birth environment which uphold the standard of midwifery service
