Elderly Nursing Trivia
Introduction: :
Hong Kong’s aging population has heightened the need for specialized geriatric care in rehabilitation hospitals. Nurses and support staff play a crucial role in managing bowel dysfunction, a common but often neglected geriatric condition. To address this knowledge gap among healthcare providers, a Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) program using the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle was implemented to enhance bowel management competencies.
Objectives: :
The program aimed to enhance healthcare professionals’ knowledge and skills in evidence-based bowel management for elderly patients, ultimately enhancing clinical practice and patient outcomes.
Methodology: :
Knowledge gaps in bowel management were identified through staff surveys, clinical audits, and incident reports. A structured educational program was designed, incorporating interactive workshops, case-based discussions, and bilingual (Cantonese/English) e-learning materials to accommodate the diverse participants. Program effectiveness was evaluated using pre- and post-knowledge assessments, practical skills audits, and participant feedback.
Result & Outcome: :
66 participants attended the workshop. Post-test results demonstrated an 84.3% knowledge improvement, with 92.3% agreeing that the content practical for daily work and 100% reporting enhanced learning.
