Erectile dysfunction (ED) causes negative impacts to men’s health. People with erectile dysfunction may result in depression, anxiety, low self-esteem. More seriously, conflict between couples may happens due to intimacy issues, poor sexual satisfaction and infertility etc... Hence, it will affect overall quality of life of men and his partner.
Objectives: :
Objectives: (1) To promote andrology health in urology nurse clinic through education and correction of misunderstanding via discussion and communication; (2) To introduce improvement measures based on patient’s medical history, family background and social context.
Methodology: :
Referrals of patient are screened by urologists. Andrology nurse clinic is arranged pier to the urologist’s clinic. Upon arrival, patients complete IIEF questionnaire and have vital signs recorded. Patients view an education video. Nurses interview patients in the andrology nurse clinic. During the interview, medical history, current medication and patients’ beliefs and behaviors are reviewed and analyzed. Education and correction of wrong concepts were provided to improve ED management, including positive lifestyle changes, healthy partner relationships, and appropriate use of medications such as Viagra (sildenafil). Blood taking (R/LFT, Lipid, fasting blood glucose, testosterone, prolactin) and ECG after the nurse clinic are conducted to identify potential precipitating factors for ED.
Result & Outcome: :
78 patients in the andrology nurse clinic in Tuen Mun Hospital were interviewed over 5 years (2021-2025). Mean age of the patients is 55. 54 patients (69%) reported psychological stress (performance), 41 patients (52%) had hypercholesterolemia, 38 patients (48%) had hypertension, 24 patients (31%) had diabetes mellitus and 6 patients (8%) had obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). In addition, 40 patients (51%) were current or former smoker. A notable proportion of patients held the belief that only medication such as Viagra (sildenafil) can help to improve ED while neglecting other precipitating factors that should be addressed or prevented also such as diet control, exercise and partners relationship.
