Introduction: :
The optimisation of clinical environment remains a vital concern for healthcare services. Children’s anxiety waiting for seeing doctor is very common. The TMH Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine clinic team has been enhancing the clinic's environment to provide more patient-centric services. With seamless collaboration between doctors, nursing and donation management team, TMH proactively engaged with Hong Kong Disneyland (HKDL) and commenced clinic upgrades with donations of a mobile theatre, wallpaper featuring Disney characters, and customised furniture, all thoughtfully designed to create a more comforting atmosphere for young patients and their families to ease their stress. It has brought triple-win to patients, hospital and HKDL in terms of clinic environment, hospital image and donor’s reputation.
Objectives: :
(1) To renovate and redesign the existing hospital environment to create a more comfortable and child-friendly space, thereby enhancing the experience of patients and their families; (2) To provide child-friendly entertainment and activity-area;
(3) To increase seating capacity of the waiting area to cope with patient growth; and (4) To improve staff working environment.
Methodology: :
A user survey was conducted with 102 patients, carers and staff, to gather feedback on their experiences before and after the environmental enhancement.
Result & Outcome: :
The project has led to significant improvements in patient waiting experience, particularly through the introduction of new child-friendly spaces and entertainment options. According to the survey:
i) Approximately 87% interviewees agreed a notable reduction in anxiety and negative emotions among patients awaiting medical follow-ups. Carers responded that the familiar cartoons bring joy to their children, making the environment child-friendly.
ii) The furniture upgrade has increased seating capacity by 13%. 88% of interviewees agreed that the environment is now more comfortable. iii) The majority of staff acclaimed the more positive work environment, and increased job satisfaction. Also, in July 2025, HKDL held a “Magical Party” with patients in the enhanced clinic with media engagement to showcase their donations to community. The community engagement represents a "win-win-win" model, benefiting patients, hospital and HKDL. The collaborative efforts among clinical departments and donation management unit, and the partnership between hospital and HKDL have successfully transformed the healthcare settings and let our patient-centric initiatives come true.
