Introduction: :
With the high anticipated demand for patient services in healthcare, frontline nurses play a crucial role in managing critically ill patients. Rapid and effective response is vital for improving patient outcomes. Nonetheless, variability in experience, knowledge, and preparedness among nurses can pose significant challenges, potentially hindering timely interventions during critical situations. In response to this issue, a comprehensive Survival Kit was developed as a quick-reference guide aimed at empowering nurses to enhance their emergency response capabilities.
Objectives: :
To evaluate the effectiveness of the Survival Kit and its impact on nurses’ knowledge and competence in emergency response through organizing a Survival Kit training workshop, conducting pre- and post-training quizzes, along with a satisfaction survey to gauge the training's reception.
Methodology: :
Development of the Survival Kit : The kit included corporate guidelines and protocols for managing critically ill patients. Survival Kit Training Workshops: Multiple identical sessions were conducted for all nurses in the rehabilitation unit. These sessions focused on critical situation management, equipping nurses with the skills necessary for effective emergency patient management. Evaluation of Knowledge and Competence: Nurses completed a pre-training quiz to assess initial knowledge and competence in critical care. A post-training quiz measured improvements. A satisfaction survey collected feedback on the Survival Kit and training session, evaluating perceived usefulness, clarity, and satisfaction.
Result & Outcome: :
21 nurses participated and the mean scores for pre- and post-training quizzes were 4.46/10 and 9.67/10 respectively, with statistically significant improvements observed. The post-training evaluations indicated increased knowledge, competence, and confidence in critical care management among nurses. Additionally, all nurses expressed a high level of satisfaction with the Survival Kit and the associated training sessions. Ultimately, these results indicated a significant increase in nurses' competence levels and a notable improvement in their ability to responding emergencies effectively. This supported rapid decision-making and contributed to better quality patient outcomes.
