Introduction: :
Nurses at different career stages require distinct knowledge and skill sets. Although UCH had already established a well-structured training framework for all level of nurses, these needs evolve in today’s rapidly transforming healthcare environment. In this regards, UCH Nursing Services Division (NSD) conducted a comprehensive Training Needs Analysis from 9 – 30 Sep 2025.The findings served to consolidate a 3-year nursing professional development & training plan in UCH.
Objectives: :
1. Create a data-driven snapshot for professional development of nursing workforce
2. Identify competency gaps and tailor-made professional development & training programs in UCH
3. Ensure the effectiveness of training suit the learning/ training needs of nurses/ nursing supporting staff in UCH
Methodology: :
The Training Need Analysis consisted of 2 components. 1. An online Learning Needs Survey was distributed to all nurses at UCH to capture their self-perceived learning needs with suggestions in three key areas. i.Professional & competency development for nurses to sustain UCH nursing core values (i.e. Leadership, Caring Culture, Compassionate Care, Clinical Excellence and Collaboration)
ii.Leadership development for nurses in different levels iii.Arrangement of training activities
Demographic data - including ranks, experience at present rank, duty in-charge experience - were collected to better understand the specific needs of different staff groups. 2.To gain a broader perspective, supervisors' views – including Department Operation Managers (DOMs) & Nurse Consultants (NCs), Ward Managers (WMs) & Associated Nurse Consultants (ANCs) - were sought through Focused Group Interview. A total 6 sessions (3 sessions for DOMs & NCs, 3 sessions for WMs & ANCs) of Focused Group Interview were held to collect information from supervisors’ perspectives.
Result & Outcome: :
Total 269 nurses completed the Learning Need Survey. Additionally, 15 DOMs, 14 NCs, 41 WMs & 17 ANCs were attended in the Focus Group Interviews. Valuable suggestions had been gathered on training framework, program designs, content, clinical exposure activities and training related administrative arrangement, which includes engaging duty in-charge training for RN earlier, reinforcing complaint handling, incident reporting among RN, enhancing presentation skills for nurses in various level, Business writing skill for senior nurses and etc. Following the data analysis, a comprehensive 3-year Professional Development & Training Plan from 2026 to 2029 was formulated and the Professional Development & Training Plan for nurses in UCH was revamped. This plan covers all key categories – including Nursing Supporting Staff Program, Preceptorship Program, Generic Competency Building Programs, Leadership Programs & Programs for Service Development.
